From the Head of the Clunes Program

Group 26 have reached the halfway mark! I suspect many students and parents thought it would never come but Visiting Day happened last weekend. It is always lovely to see the excitement building up amongst the students as the weekend approaches and the welcomes the staff witnessed as parents arrived, it was obvious that the parents felt the same. It was a good opportunity to catch up on family news and for the students to show their families some of the local sights. Students can often feel a bit flat in Week 5 after the excitement of seeing family. I spoke to all of Group 26 on Monday, about the need to be supportive of each other and to regroup and focus on all the opportunities in the remaining four weeks. In no time at all parents will be back in Clunes for the Presentation Day but in the meantime the students will be very busy on their Clunes Projects!!

Constructing Technology

For my elective I did Constructing Technology. In Constructing Technology we learnt about the relationship between technology and science. We also learnt about how computers work. To start off with we tried to make the tallest structure we could out of five pieces of paper and one and a half metres of masking tape. The tower had to stand up for 10 seconds. The tallest was approximately one metre. Mostly we learnt about how computers store information.

Amazing Race

For “Am I a Leader” we did The Amazing Race. It was like the television show. We got a driver and a clue and we had to do tasks at the pit stops. We did two races: the first pit stop of the first race was to fill up 100 bags of sheep poo and put it in a trailer. For this task we had a shovel and a bucket. It was slow and we were racing the other team. For the next pit stop we had to fill a bin with water using a plastic bag and a rubber band. We could not move the bin and had to move the water to it with the plastic bag. This task took ages and my team got a 5-minute penalty for splashing the other team. Next we had to find a street sign and that was the last task for the first race. The next race for the first pit stop we had to make a triangle using people then we had to turn it upside down by moving two people. We had to carry a balloon using our legs to a barbeque. For the third and final pit stop we had to blindfold 3 people and tell them where to put their hands to pick up the letters. The letters made a phrase that the scramblers decoded. Team “Creative Circle” was going to leave before team “Go” so the spare people stood in front of the bus and the bus stopped just in front of us. Team “Creative Circle” jumped out of the bus and ran back to campus and won the second race: as a prize we all got an ice cream.

Yoga Ashram

On Tuesday, all the girls in the course ‘I Am Woman’ spent the day at a yoga ashram in Rocklyn. We practised some simple yoga positions and learnt which parts of our bodies they affect. Then we had a session of relaxation, in which many people fell asleep, and later went for a peaceful walk through the forest. We enjoyed a delicious vegetarian lunch of rice, curry and dhal and morning and afternoon tea of fresh fruit and tea. Our guide, Boomi, taught us a lot about the small things we can do to affect our mood and increase the amount of energy we have. Everyone had a great, relaxing day and when we left at 3o’clock, everyone was feeling cleansed and rejuvenated.

Masquerade ball

On the night Saturday 13th of May the Masquerade Ball took place. On Saturday afternoon we made our masks and learnt five dances including the waltz, progressive barn dance and military 2 step. Nobody really knew the dances that well but we all had fun anyway. Everyone had lots of fun and looked great. The night was a great success.

People Places, Soulful Spaces

For ‘people places, soulful spaces’ we went into a forest and sat by ourselves doing 'solo time'. What we had to do in the 'solo time' was create a creative art peive using any materials you have, but it had to reflect you somehow. Everyone's looked really good and where really interesting. The day was really fu, peaceful and relaxing.

Creek in Autumn

Last Friday our House Leader took us on a walk down to the creek. We walked through the amazing colourful leaves and had a peaceful time down there with our House. Whilst we were walking we saw a swing and thought it would be heaps of fun to go on it but we didn’t end up going on it. There were a lot of beautiful things to see down there. On the way back we went past the Keebles guesthouse and outside there were amazingly huge bright red leaves.
