Group 25: Week 7 & 8

From the Head of the Clunes Program

It was with some trepidation that we welcomed Group 25 back to Clunes to complete their 8 week program. Given that they had a two week break due to the early school holidays that coincided with the Commonwealth Games we suspected that they may have got "out of the swing of things" and find it very difficult to settle back in. We need not have worried as the students all returned with their batteries recharged and settled into the Clunes routine quickly. This was just as well as we had a very busy Week 7 with the inaugural Collective Potential Program being run. All students elected to participate in one of the 3 day activities which were designed to see what students could give when they put their minds to it and worked together. The four programs that ran were Break The Cycle, Building A Cob Oven, What A Load Of Bollards, and Beyond The Great Dividing Trail. This newsletter contains reports from students on each of these projects all of which proved to be very successful. Nearly $5000 has been raised to provide bicycles for Health Workers in Namibia, a significant amount of maintenance work has been done on sections of The Great Dividing Trail near Daylesford, eight bollards, each of which tells a story about the Clunes program, have been installed and painted on the campus, and this Friday will see the first pizzas produced from the mud brick Cob oven. Group 25 have certainly left their mark on Clunes.

Returning to Clunes

Returning to Clunes I was thinking of all the things that I have done in Clunes and all the happiness in Clunes. It’s been really hard for me to leave Melbourne because after that two-week break I didn’t feel like going back again. But I was again thinking of all the memory in Clunes like all the things that I have learnt in Clunes and all of the people I missed over the two-week break. When I returned to Clunes I was really happy of see every body again. The first day of returning to Clunes is just like the first day of Clunes but you just got more idea of what is going to happen. The first thing that I did at Clunes was playing basketball with Andrew because I miss playing basketball with him. We played basketball until the meeting started and after that it was time for dinner.  I didn’t eat that much because I was too busy readjusting to Clunes.

What a load Bollards

At the start I didn’t know what “what a load of Bollards” was about, but after the teacher told us what we had to do we couldn’t wait to start. Bollards are like a wooden pole with painting on it. So at the first we dig a hole for our wooden pole to fit in, it was really hard for us because there was a lot of rocks in our hole and we had to help the girls that were also doing Bollards around us. We had to put water in our hole to make the rock go softer so we could dig faster. After that Marco, Carlos and myself had to carry the wooden pole to our hole. After that we carried a bag of cement and some water to mix it together then finally it was done, the poles were in and then all we had to do was paint. At first we didn’t know what to paint so we just drew a cartoon character that we all know. It was really hard for us because we haven’t done any thing like this before. Some of the final designs included a multi-cultural family (at the front gate), clowns, mermaids, fern leaf designs and many more. Our painting was at the front of the gate. All of the Bollards turned out really well as you can see from the photographs.

Beyond the Great Divide!!!

For the last three days I have been walking non stop through bush land and beyond the great divide trail, this was tough but also ended up rather rewarding, at points I know myself and others wanted to give up but we stuck through and completed the challenged happily.
Throughout our walk we had many encounters with some lovely little possums, we got to sleep under the stars… how romantic, we also carried our packs which where sheets of plastic with rope to hold them all together, got a massage when I got back.
I made and become closer to a lot of people that I wasn’t before I left, over all it was a great and rewarding experience. Thanks Ollie, Zoe and Suz

Community Service

Every Friday all the students complete community service. This means we all do something for the community; some of the choices are writing for the newsletter, going to the newsagent or hairdressers, helping out Barry our park ranger, working at the bakery or Robbie G’s café, assisting at Tinnakorri Animal Farm and finally completing community service at one of three local Primary Schools, either Clunes, Smeaton or Talbot. The ones that I have been involved in have been newsagency, hairdressers, and newsletter. The newsagency and newsletter have been my favourite the newsagent because I get to use the cash register. The newsletter because it is easy the hairdressers are ok but not as good as the newsagent and newsletter. I hope to work at Robbie G’s because I heard the milkshakes are really good.

Music!!!

At the beginning of clunes we all got to decide whether or not we wanted to do music or drama, most of us said no because of our lack of talent, but the creative ones put there names up.
Today as I write the musicians are arriving at their destination of rehearsal, joel the amazing pianist is a very talented little boy with a big heart, although at the moment he is finding it difficult to play as he has a sprained wrist from the 150k bike road, elliot, Hamish, jack, will and Alistair Truman have formed a group using Alistair on bass, elliot, Hamish, jack and will on quitar, elliot singing and jack also on drums. A few of the girls are perfoming a vocal piece as a group and have achieved great goals, they sound amazing and we all cant wait to hear them when they complete.
EJ being her amazing self helped out the girls with their own personal pitches and Michele helped around a lot and runs the course wonderfully, the handsome dave helps out the boys with their wonderful talent.
Cant wait to hear the musicians, good luck and well done!
